Embark on a picturesque circular walk around Llanbadoc and Cefn Ila, covering a distance of 3.5 miles and taking approximately 2.5 hours. This invigorating journey traverses woodlands and fields, offering splendid views and a glimpse into the rich history of the region.

Starting Point:
Commence your adventure at Llanbadoc Island, Usk, adjacent to St Madoc’s Church, marked on OS Map 152 Newport and Pontypool.

Terrain:
The trail weaves through woodlands and fields, featuring moderate climbs and several stiles. Note that some sections may not be suitable for all types of dogs.

Walk Route:

  1. Begin at the car park, passing St Madoc’s Church and walking along the pavement.
  2. Turn right, crossing the main road, and proceed up the lane between Myrtle Villa and Ty Mawr Farm.
  3. Follow the uphill lane, passing houses, towards Panty-cwcw wood.
  4. Enjoy views of the Usk Valley and Wentwood Forest as you ascend.
  5. Continue along the path, passing through gates, and reach a field as the path levels out.
  6. Follow the old track, believed to be a Roman road, to the brow of the hill.
  7. Descend along the field boundary, passing the Iron Age hill fort of Twm Barlwm in the distance.
  8. Pass through a gate on the field boundary, heading downhill past Cae-maen conifer wood.
  9. Turn right, walk down through the grass field to the gate onto the Usk to Coed-y-Paen road.
  10. Turn right, then shortly turn left beside the former entrance lodge to Cefn Ila. Continue past the car park.

Cefn Ila: A Historical Haven:
Cefn Ila, once the home of writer Edward Trelawny, offers a fascinating journey through time. The estate, converted into a maternity hospital in the mid-20th century, now belongs to Coed Cadw/Woodland Trust. The 72-acre grounds, gradually transformed into a native woodland, invite wildlife and walkers alike.

Scenic Highlights:

  • Explore the grounds and remnants of the mansion, razed down but leaving behind impressive gardens.
  • Wander through the orchard, walled garden, and arboretum.
  • Enjoy panoramic views towards the Sugar Loaf and discover remains of WW2 pillboxes.

Choosing Your Path:
Decide between two routes:

  1. Descend through the wood, crossing stiles, to reach Usk Town Bridge. Explore Usk or return along the river to Llanbadoc church.
  2. Alternatively, follow the footpath atop the wood, climbing stiles and descending to Llanbadoc church.

Local Ties and Historical Tidbits:
Learn about Alfred Russell Wallace, co-founder of the theory of evolution, born in Llanbadoc. Discover the churchyard’s unique features, including cedar trees planted by Trelawny and the resting place of the French Marquis de la Pasture family.

Conclusion:
This circular walk not only provides a refreshing outdoor experience but also unveils the layered history of the region. As you traverse the woodlands, fields, and historic sites, soak in the natural beauty and cultural richness that make Llanbadoc and Cefn Ila a delightful destination for a winter stroll.
